Vappu tulee – onko työpaikkasi valmis?

Tänä vappuna kannustamme kaikkia aloittamaan järjestäytymisen omalla työpaikallaan!

Vappu on työväen juhla. Se on ollut sitä siitä lähtien, kun Pariisissa vuonna 1889 kokoontunut toinen internationaali teki päätöksen työväen yleisen juhlan pitämiseksi toukokuun ensimmäisenä päivänä Chicagon työläisten muiston kunniaksi. Kolme vuotta aikaisemmin kahdeksan tunnin työpäivää vaatineessa mielenosoituksessa Chicagossa oli räjähtänyt pommi, mistä seurasi poliisin silmitön ammuskelu. Tapahtuma tunnetaan nimellä Haymarketin verilöyly. Siitä tulee tänä vappuna 140 vuotta.

Tämä ei kuitenkaan useinkaan ole tilanne, sillä luokkatietoinen vapun juhlinta ei ole tällä hetkellä valtavirtaa suomalaisessa työpaikkakulttuurissa. Sen sijaan vappu nähdään keväisenä vapaapäivänä, hyvänä syynä istua auringossa ja siemailla skumppaa.

Auringossa istumisessa skumppalasillisen äärellä ei tietenkään ole mitään pahaa, päinvastoin. Mutta silloin, kun sen myötä suljetaan silmät palkkakuopilta, työntekijöiden oikeuksien polkemiselta ja muilta työelämäheikennyksiltä, skumppaan tulee kitkerä maku ja aurinko menee pilveen. Mutta kun työväki löytää toisensa ja alkaa vetää yhtä köyttä yhteisen hyvän edistämiseksi solidaarisuudesta toinen toistaan ja kaikkia maailman työläisiä kohtaan, on lämmin vaikka vappuaurinko paistelisi niin paksun pilven takana, että skumppa lasissa jäätyisi!

May Day is coming—is your workplace ready?

This May Day, we encourage everyone to start organizing at their own workplace.

May Day is a workers’ holiday. It has been so ever since the Second International, meeting in Paris in 1889, decided to hold a general workers’ celebration on the first day of May in memory of the Chicago workers. Three years earlier, a bomb had exploded during a demonstration in Chicago demanding an eight-hour workday, leading to indiscriminate police gunfire. The event is known as the Haymarket Massacre. This year is the 140th anniversary.

The best way to celebrate would surely be if we could genuinely celebrate Workers’ May Day with those we work alongside—our colleagues and coworkers.

Ever since then, May Day has been celebrated as a workers’ holiday, and workers are supposed to celebrate together. The best way to celebrate would surely be if we could genuinely celebrate Workers’ May Day with those we work alongside—our colleagues and coworkers. However, this is not often the case, as class-conscious May Day celebrations are not currently mainstream in Finnish workplace culture. Instead, May Day is seen as a spring holiday, a good excuse to sit in the sun and sip sparkling wine.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with sitting in the sun with a glass of sparkling wine—quite the opposite. But when doing so means turning a blind eye to wage cuts, the trampling of workers’ rights, and other deteriorations in working conditions, the sparkling wine takes on a bitter taste and the sun disappears behind the clouds.

But when workers find each other and start acting in unison to promote the common good—out of solidarity with one another and with all the world’s workers—it feels warm, even if the May Day sun is behind thick clouds that the cold freezes the champagne in your glass!
