Miksi tarvitaan IWW?

Tarve työläisten solidaarisuuteen ja autonomiaan perustuvalle järjestäytymiselle osoittautuu jatkuvasti suuremmaksi. Nykyisten ammattiliittojen valta on heikentynyt, eivätkä vakiintuneet ammattiliitot ainakaan yksiselitteisesti enää puolusta pirstaloidun ja hajallaan olevan työväenluokan etua.

IWW eli Industrial Workers of the World rantautui Suomeen vastaamaan tähän tarpeeseen. Perustamiskokous pidettiin 5. huhtikuuta 2025. IWW:läiset rakentavat taistelevaa, omaa etuaan ajavaa työväenluokkaa tämän päivän Suomeen ja koko maailmaan.

Mitä IWW tekee?

IWW:n toiminta perustuu työpaikkakomiteoiden työskentelyyn. Työpaikkakomitea on se toiminnallinen perusyksikkö, jossa työpaikan olosuhteita ja valtasuhteita muutetaan suoran toiminnan kautta työläisille edullisemmaksi. Käytännössä tämä voi olla esimerkiksi johdon painostamista työolosuhteiden parantamiseksi. Keinovalikoima on laaja ja vain mielikuvitus on rajana, kun työläiset yhdistävät voimansa.

Työpaikkakomiteat eivät järjestäydy ammattikohtaisesti, vaan kaikki samalla työalalla (industries) työskentelevät tuotantotyöntekijöistä asiantuntija- tai huoltotyöläisiin järjestäytyvät saman työpaikkakomitean alle. Näin murretaan hajottamisen ja hallitsemisen rakennetta, johon nykypäivän sortava palkkatyöjärjestelmä on meidät pakottanut.

Työpaikkakomiteoihin kiteytyy syndikalistisen järjestäytymisen perusideologia: tärkein ja parhain tieto työläisten tarpeista on heillä itsellään. Yhdistäessään voimansa työläisillä on mahdollisuus ottaa valta työpaikan asioissa. Pitkällä tähtäimellä IWW pyrkii tilanteeseen, jossa jokaista alaa ja jokaista työpaikkaa hallinnoidaan työläisten autonomian kautta. 

IWW ei siis ole tavanomainen, ylhäältäpäin johdettu ammattiliitto, jonka jäsenyys usein typistyy jäsenmaksun maksamiseen ja kenties edustajistovaaleissa äänestämiseen. IWW ei ulkoista työläisten asioiden hoitamista ammattiliiton palkkalistoilla oleville henkilöille, vaan IWW:läiset ottavat ohjat omiin käsiinsä järjestäytymällä työpaikkakomiteoihin ja niiden välisiin verkostoihin. IWW:n työpaikkakomiteoita toimii jo muutamalla työpaikalla. Onko sinun työpaikkasi seuraava?

Miten pääset mukaan?

Järjestäytymisen aloittaminen omalla työpaikalla on helpointa paikallisosaston tuella. IWW Suomen osasto tarjoaa tukea ja opastusta toiminnan aloittamiseen yhdessä muiden kanssa. Siksi työpaikkaorganisoimista suunnittelevan kannattaa ensimmäiseksi liittyä IWW:n jäseneksi ja hakeutua yhteistyöhön samalla paikkakunnalla toimivien IWW:läisten kanssa. IWW:n toimintaa Suomessa rakennetaan parhaillaan – liittymällä mukaan pääset luomaan työläisten solidaarista ja toverillista verkostoa omalle paikkakunnallesi ja työalallasi.

Why is the IWW needed?

There is a growing need for workers to organize based on solidarity and autonomy. The power of existing unions has weakened, and these established unions no longer unequivocally defend the interests of a fragmented and scattered working class.

Industrial Workers of the World are determined to build a fighting working class

IWW, or Industrial Workers of the World, formed in Finland by Fellow Workers to meet this demand. The founding meeting was held on April 5, 2025. Industrial Workers of the World are determined to build a fighting working class that promotes its own interests in today’s Finland and throughout the world.

What does the IWW do?

IWW’s activities are based on workplace committees. A workplace committee is the basic operational unit where workplace conditions and power relations are changed through direct action to benefit workers. In practice, this can be, for example, pressuring management to improve working conditions. The range of methods is wide, and only imagination is the limit when workers join their forces.

Workplace committees are not organized by profession, but all workers in the same industry, from production workers to specialists and maintenance workers, are organized under the same workplace committee. This breaks down the structure of division and control that today’s oppressive wage system has forced upon us.

Workplace committees embody the basic ideology of syndicalist organization: workers themselves have the most important and best knowledge of their own needs. By joining forces, workers can take control of solving workplace issues. In the long term, IWW aims to achieve a situation where every industry and every workplace is managed through worker autonomy.

IWW is therefore not a conventional, top-down union, where membership often boils down to paying dues and perhaps voting in representative elections. IWW does not outsource the management of workers’ affairs to people on the union’s payroll; instead, IWW members take matters into their own hands by organizing themselves into workplace committees and networks between them. IWW workplace committees are already operating in some workplaces. Will your workplace be next?

How can you get involved?

The easiest way to start organizing at your workplace is with the support of your local chapter. IWW Finland chapter offers support and guidance on how to get started. Therefore, if you are planning to organize your workplace, you should consider becoming a member of IWW and seek cooperation with other IWW members in your area. IWW’s activities in Finland are currently being developed – by joining, you can help create a network of solidarity and camaraderie among workers in your locality and field of work.
