Woltin kuriirit ovat omatoimisesti ryhtyneet lakkoon Nikosiassa ja Limasolissa olojensa ja työehtojensa parantamiseksi. Yhtiö on vastannut lakkoon sulkemalla lakkoon osallistuneiden tilejä Woltin sovelluksessa sekä lähettämällä aseistettuja kätyrejään uhkailemaan ja pahoinpitelemään lakkoilijoita. Myös paikallinen poliisi on Woltin apuna lakkoilijoiden painostamisessa ja pelottelussa.

Finnish company Wolt uses violence to break its couriers’ strike in Cyprus

Wolt couriers have gone on strike on their own initiative in Nicosia and Limassol to improve their working conditions and terms of employment. The company has responded to the strike by closing the accounts of participants in the Wolt app and by sending armed thugs to threaten and assault the strikers. Local police are also assisting Wolt in pressuring and intimidating the strikers.

“They are migrant workers – asylum seekers and students – trying to make an honest living. They deliver our food, drinks and groceries, day or night, rain or shine. They get “paid” to bring our orders to our doors, but not for the return trip. They are getting attacked and robbed by gangs of violent racists. Their direct employers (contractors called fleet managers) are getting 30-40% commission off their salaries, force them to cover their entire Social Insurance and General Health System contributions by themselves, do not pay anything for overtime, violate the collective agreement and have them provide, fuel and service their own vehicles. As in Finland, the majority of Wolt’s delivery drivers in Cyprus are immigrants who are already in a disadvantaged position in the labor market. The company shamelessly exploits this vulnerable position in its pronouncedly exploitative business model.

In Finland, too, Wolt couriers have been fighting for better working conditions for years.
